Firstly, I would like to say thanks for giving me a great opportunity to deliver my brief speech. And in this chance, the topic of my speech is Save Our Nation.
Indonesia. A country famous for it's many cultural backgrounds, tourism sites, wonderful scenery, spices, the friendly people.Indonesia is gearing up to deploy six of its peacekeepers currently stationed overseas to Syria to help the mission monitoring the UN-backed ceasefire in the troubled Middle-East country, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said on Tuesday.
The peacekeepers will be among 30 unarmed UN observers sent to monitor the ceasefire. The first group, consisting of six observers, reportedly arrived in Syria on Sunday.
“Communications between Indonesia and the UN are still intensive. Last night, we talked to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and he asked if Indonesia could transfer our peacekeepers to Syria,” Marty said after attending a welcome ceremony for New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at the Merdeka Palace.
“Moving already-deployed peacekeepers will be more time-effective given the urgency of the situation in Syria,” Marty said.
According to Marty, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has given a positive response to Ban’s proposal.
“But we have two conditions: First, ensuring that the ceasefire is truly upheld, second, ensuring that there is approval from the Syrian government. We have told Ban about these concerns and last night he told us that they shared similar concerns,” Marty said.
The UN initiated the observer mission to Syria after forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad breached the ceasefire, supposed to take effect on Thursday, and killed five civilians in the rebel city of Homs.
The UN Security Council agreed on Saturday to send the 30 monitors but there has been a proposal to enlarge the UN mission to 250 people.
According to Marty, there would be six Indonesians among the initial 30 observers.
“That is recognition of the high level of trust the UN has in Indonesia,” he said.
The United Nations says more than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began about a year ago.
Indonesia is among 120 countries providing nearly 120,000 peacekeepers worldwide.
About 1,900 Indonesian troops are involved in peacekeeping in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET), as well as other UN missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Liberia, Haiti and Sudan.
Of that number, about 1,446 are currently serving in Lebanon, according to data from the Defense Ministry.
So, believe in ourselves. And the last "let's do our best to save our nation !" Thank you for your attention.
